Many times when we are in a depressed state we feel so self-conscious and try to cover up our emotions by masking them with drugs or alcohol. Not only does this become a problem with the health of you and your family, but it can also put you in an even worse position as you suffer the physical effects of the withdrawal.

Many people think that there is a link between drugs and depression. While alcohol and other drugs can certainly cause depression, it is important to remember that it is not the sole cause of depression. Drugs can add to the symptoms of depression, they may not be the main cause.

In some cases, the person may need to take two medications at a time. Medication is often used to help depression in the short term, while alternative treatments are used in the long term.

– Cessation of Substance Use – This may seem odd, since stopping the use of drugs or alcohol may bring about a sense of relief from depression. However, there are many people who simply can’t cope with the feeling of being overwhelmed by depression and will resort to more problematic means to cope with the problem.

– Change in lifestyle – As stated previously, these coping mechanisms can work for a short period of time, and then they will seem to fall apart. If the depression is more than a short-term problem, it may be a sign that there is something seriously wrong with the individual and should be looked at by a medical professional.

– Meditation – This is often thought of as an answer to a deep sense of unhappiness and depression. Meditation involves meditation and a life of reflection in order to get into a more positive mindset. Meditation has been known to work for those who are suffering from depression.

– Psychological Approach – One that is based on acceptance of your feelings and dealing with the problem without drugs or alcohol. This type of medication is often used for those who don’t want to deal with the psychological side effects of drugs and alcohol. They try to look at the problem and try to help the individual cope with the problem as well as possible.

In addition to the above, the following is an effective method of treating depression.

– Psychotherapy – This involves a group of people talking to each other about how they feel about their feelings and the problem that they are having. This is an effective treatment method because it takes the pressure off of the sufferer and allows them to talk openly about their feelings. The group can help each other and help them to tackle the problem on a personal level. Therapists are trained in order to provide effective therapy and this is the recommended form of treatment for depression.
