DIY beauty may not be the most glamorous job on the planet, but it is one that gives you real-world experience, provides a fabulous career boost, and can even help you make some money. If you want to become a makeup artist, there are lots of ways to go about it.
Creativity. If you have always been drawn to the arts and crafts, there’s a chance that your talents lie in this field. You might even want to become a sculptor or painter. Remember, though, that being creative takes hard work and plenty of practice, and may take years before you’re wonderful at what you do.
Experience. You could become a professional in cosmetology, where you’re called upon to beautify not just those in the service industry but also the public. In many areas, these beautification jobs are available only to those who’ve finished at least a few years of college, vocational training, or apprenticeship or have prior experience.
Makeup. From brows to lips, makeup is the very basis of what makes a person look gorgeous. Even if you don’t consider yourself a great makeup artist, you can use makeup to give yourself a better look. The more beautiful you look, the more likely you are to be hired for a real makeup job.
Arts and crafts. Traditional arts and crafts could include knitting, quilting, painting, wood carving, sewing, fabric art, pottery, ceramics, pottery, woodworking, etc. Whatever kind of art you enjoy, it can also help to give you a sense of direction as a budding artist.
Travel. Becoming a travel agent would mean that you’d have to get yourself to your client’s hotel room or to the airport so that they can be helped. You could also help them shop for flights, hotel rooms, etc. These days, there are agencies dedicated to doing this sort of “traveling sales.” Some of them even hire freelance makeup artists to travel with them and are ready to get on the road when they need them.
Photography. Many people will take photos of themselves, and you could be in the market for these photos. Remember, though, that with the internet, you can make some money from photos that you took while traveling.
Makeup artists. It is possible to work as a makeup artist. As you’d expect, makeup artists must deal with a number of challenges on a daily basis. They must be experts at creating the perfect look for their clients.
Culinary. In addition to doing manicures and pedicures, it’s possible to be a culinary arts specialist. You’ll have to work on more than just bread and cheeses; you’ll also be expected to cook, be knowledgeable about recipes, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
Salon assistants. If you have the time, and maybe some extra cash to spare, you can become a salon assistant. With this career, you can help beauty salon staff members do their jobs, and you’ll be allowed to go to work every day.
The number of options for doing what you want in the field of beauty is virtually limitless. What may initially seem like an impossible dream can become a reality if you keep your eyes open and apply yourself.
